Family 5 K

REGISTER

Not ready to tackle 26 or even 13 miles? You can still take part in all the fun and festivities on race day by registering for the Family 5K. Our fast, flat course takes runners through the heart of the furniture capital, past a local school and playing fields, and back to finish at Showplace alongside marathon and half-marathon runners.

Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome in the 3.1-mile event. Our focus is on participation, not speed, so we’re awarding medals to all finishers but no prizes for top runners or age-group winners.

Toward Healthy Childhoods

finish lineFor the 2009 Family 5K the NC Marathon partnered with GO FAR, a nonprofit organization which trains school students to run a 5K road race, teaching kids about character, goal-setting, and healthy lifestyles along the way. Founded by High Point resident Robin Lindsay, MS, PA-C, the program is led by volunteer teachers and open to interested parents. Over the last five years, the GO FAR program has reached more than 600 children each year in more than a dozen schools and recreation programs.

The spring 2009 GO FAR 5K was held in conjunction with the NC Marathon. Hundreds of schoolchildren, their teachers and parents were at the starting line on May 2 as the culmination of their 10-week training program.

Runners of all ages are welcome to register and join the race. All runners will receive race t-shirts, goodie bags, a final chip time, and finisher medals, but no prizes will be awarded for place or age group in order to keep the emphasis on participation rather than speed and prizes.

Kids having fun runningThe flat, fast 5K course begins and ends with the marathon and half-marathon course. Runners from all three events and their families and friends are invited to celebrate afterwards with music, food, and fun. A course map will be posted soon.
